Until 2022, we had no water tanks or running water. Everyday, we had to walk 700 meters on small paths up and down the mountain to collect water and carry it in 20 kg heavy water cans back to our centre – 15 times a day. At times when we were too busy with our patients, we needed to pay workers 500 Shilling for getting one water can.
Thanks to our volunteers Michelle from Malaysia and Liesha from Belgium, we now have two 5000 litre tanks and one 1000 litre tank connected to two taps, a shower and a flushing toilet. The tanks were transported with cars from Mbale to Bududa. After that, no roads are connected to our community centre. Thanks to the hard work of our people, we were able to carry the tanks with our own hands over several hours and small paths up to our community centre.
The total expenses for this project so far lie at 5.9 million Ugandan Shilling (~1500 €). Unfortunately, only two of the three water tanks are connected to each other and the pipe system. So during dry season, when both tanks are empty, we need to collect water from the third tank and carry it in cans to the other tanks. Our goal for the future is to connect all of the three tanks to have a safe supply of water throughout the year.
